I already saw the enclosures of reptiles, these enclosures do not meet the minimum standard acceptable, also Mr. Temsah, the GM of Lions Village adopts hybrid breeding, prodcuing ligers and trigons (offspring of Lions and Tigers), who monitors the breeds, to whom does he sell the animals...?

Nirvana Said March 24 at 11:29pm Report
Dear Dina,

Couple of days ago, a friend of mine on her way to Alex saw five dogs (Labradors, and other breeds) being physically abused in a village called "Karyet el assad/lion village" in the dessert road... The five dogs were tied from their collars to a stand were they cant sit or move, just stand still in their places.. My friend called the guy working there; he told her that they are using them as zeena/decor, for visitors to watch…

So my friend after fighting with the guy, she went and released the collars a bit so that the dogs can sit.. One of the dogs was sleeping while standing, another one had blood around his eyes and feet… My friend doest live in Egypt, she was just here for a visit…

So how can we save those dogs ASAP, because I don’t think they will live in such circumstances…

Thank you for the info Dina...
Since there is no law to help us seize those poor beautiful souls, can we start a massive campaign against this village.. We ask newspaper/reporter to help us; we use all the religious verses that prevent this abuse to attract people to work with us?? I bet we can find lots of people who are willing to work in this campaign with us..
P.S.: My Mum told me there is this very old law that help authorities seize abused animals, is this true?

Dina Zulfikar March 25 at 4:34pm laws are published in AWAR facebook group, however, their is a way out, (unless cruel action is done for reasons) reasons, can be always found to get out of the problem. I have reports sent to all authorities about Lion village, check lists, complaints from various foreigners, complaints from me... yes we start campaign, pls use AWAR group and ANIMAL RIGHTS PROTECTION GROUP IN EGYPT GROUP to start the campaign. Try to join us in tomorrow's campaign at the zoo.
Did you report, did you call Dr. Hassan Shafik, ? what have you done with the list I sent you to file complaint?

Since the last two years we have had reports backed up by eye witness accounts and verbal statements of the appalling conditions in which animals are kept in Lions village. The wild animals, domestic breeding of dogs (hundreds), pet shop with many animals kept in unaccepted conditons, the reptile section recently added, in which the reptiles are kept also in unaccepted standards, off course besides the unmonitored hybridization (breeding) of big cats ligers and trigers.

We kindly therefore ask the Egyptian Authorities concerned
The Wildlife Sector
EEAA - Ministry of Environment
Utility Police Force
to investigate our complaints and concerns as a matter of top and urgent priority. In the meantime all Animal Welfare societies in Egypt are on 'high alert' in response to the appalling conditions of such facilities as the Lions Village, and any possible further facility which does not comply to the minimum standard of animal welfare accepted anywhere in Egypt.

Greetings from Australia . According to your reply to Dina Zulficar on 26 December 2009 within 48 hours from that date a checkup committee from the Wildlife Dept. Officers, environmental Police Officers and a member of your Quarantine Department would be checking out the facility at Lion Village , Cairo . I would be very interested to know what was reported back to you and what action, if any, has been taken to alleviate the suffering of the animals situated there. I am very grateful that you are taking complaints about this establishment seriously as it does impact on visitor’s opinions. Thank you for your taking what seems to be the appropriate action and I look forward to receiving a reply. Enid Page.

I would like to thank the Wildlife Unit for not renewing the permit of Lions village, but, not renewing the permit does not put an end to the suffering of the animals currently kept at Lions Village nor does this action  mitigate the problem.

Dear Enid

Thank you for asking for following up the Lions Village appalling conditions  with the Wildlife governmental sector.

Animal Welfare groups, societies and individuals have previously been complaining about the appalling conditions of animals at the Lions Village.  We have made complaints to the Wildlife Sector several times, we have made complaints to the EEAA Egyptian Environmental Protection Agency - Ministry of Environment, we have called and made complaints to the Utility Police Unit concerned with confiscation.

Your email, as well as other complaints were forwarded to the Egyptian Authorities concerned, the wildlife sector, Ministry of Agriculture.

Yes, according to reply to the forwarded complaints, the wildlife sector mentioned that a check
up would be made to the facility and in case of non compliance animals would be confiscated.  I have been trying to follow the matter with Dr. Ragi Thoma.  What ;I got to know that the facility of Lions Village will not be granted any new permits, meaning, the wildlife unit would not renew the permits of Lions Village as long as they are not complying to accepted standards.

I would wish to add, this is a good step from Wildlife Unit, but, not renewing the permit does not put an end to the suffering of the animals currently kept at Lions Village and mitigate the problem.

Good evening to all,

I'm  a witness to what is happening in the Lions village

I've been a fan of this Village at beginnings, and I saw the good Link with animals and their trainers

But now I am really after what I have seen these days of poor care and attention as well as feeding

And the presence of infected animals and an inhumane treatment, they put them just for decoration.

Also during the short visits surprised by the disappearance of a very large number of animals

Shirazi cats I found them in cages and the situation is so dire it has become wild and we can not get close to their cages,And find some animals as drugs can not afford to do anything

I'm with you all my energies

I'M WITH YOU

Sweet Cat

Dear Dina,

There is No God-damn reason for animals to be tortured this way.  I couldn't understand what I was seeing, as the position of the body of the little baby lion did not appear normal.

I would have No Problem taking a gun an shooting any human male in the head that I saw with a baby animal, especially one in such painful condition.  This little baby was Literally Broken because the Bastards who had him did not know, nor care, about his welfare - only the Stinking Money that they made.  They only wanted to CONTROL him, so they broke his body.  I sure hope more tourists begin to complain and refuse to pay blood money to these Two-Legged Demons.

It's a good thing I don't live in Egypt because I would be spending more time in Egyptian jails than I would be spending outside of them - I would be unable to hold back beating up or shooting Bastards like these.

The Monster who did this to this baby cub should be punished to the full extent of the law, but I don't believe he'll ever spend any time behind bars. My only hope is that when he dies, he'll go to that Very Special Place in Hell where Monsters like him belong.

Aida

The story below has been verified by several professional rescue groups. I have been in direct contact with Kathy and have promised to help her and Egyptian rescue groups by spreading the information and asking all of you to please take the time to read her story and email your concerns to the contacts included in the link listed below. This horror has been going on for a long time and must be stopped.

There are politics involved and they need our help to convince the Egyptian authorities that the world is watching them. Please, after you email the authorities, forward this email to everyone and ask them to do the same. Use Facebook, whatever, just get the word out. Keep in mind that there are other species of animals being kept at this “zoo” also, so wildlife contacts should be involved too. If you need more information about this place, Google “Lion Village, Egypt”.

Please, let’s make a difference!! SEE THE LINK BELOW KATHY”S STORY FOR CONTACT INFORMATION. Please be polite in your emails. These are people who can help in the fight to protect these animals, NOT the ones responsible.

Ref: The Lion Village, Cairo - Alexandria Rd. Egypt

We just returned from a two week trip to in beautiful spectacular country of Egypt. We were there with two dear friends of ours and our Egyptian guide. I want to tell you the horror I witnessed while in Egypt. On Monday Nov. 8th 2010 our guide drove us from Cairo to Alexandria, which is about a 4 hr. drive through the Sahara desert. 3 hrs. into the drive, our guide stopped at a huge restaurant / zoo on the road going north from Cairo. It had a huge billboard with a tiger on it and in English said “The Lion Village”.

We were going in to use the restrooms facilities, and have a cup of tea or coffee. Upon going in, I noticed a huge restaurant area that seated about 200 hundred people, our guide said that animal shows are put on there.

Going over to the restroom area, I quickly noticed three big Newfoundland dogs, all the same, tied on chains to a fence that housed pigeons. They were just laying there and never raised their heads. They were chained in a way that all they could to is just stand up. One gave a barely low audible bark, then suddenly came rushing to the dog was a 4 or 5 yr. old boy, he said something in his language to the dog and then proceeded to kick this poor chained dog. I immediately told the child “no” do not kick the dog. I shook my finger at him, he understood and stopped. I later realized this child was on his own in there, going around and doing what he wanted to the different dogs. I figured his parents must work in there. I noticed there was only but a handful of tourists in this place. Then I quickly came upon a beautiful eagle behind a plastic enclosure that was only about 10 ft. x 2ft., this eagle couldn’t even spread out it’s wings! Then out of the corner of my eye I noticed a small group of cocker Spaniels, there was about 8 to 10 of them, maybe more, all in one oblong pen, about 5 x 15’, and short enough that you could reach over and pet them. You could see not much thought was put into good breeding of these great dogs, but they were definitely the breed, and again in not good shape condition. Then I suddenly saw a group of Shi Tzu dogs about 8 to 10, all together in a small pen standing on their dog house. Then I wondered what is going on here. I was told it was for the children to see, because they don’t get to see these types of dogs, they only see street dogs. I asked if they sell these dogs, and was told no, they are just for the children.

Then I became horrified when I saw 2 rows of short, very small pens that housed 2 or more of different breeds of different dogs. They were only about 8 x 10 ft. and consisted of a saw dust like shavings for bedding, there were no blankets for the dogs to lie on, let alone a toy or a ball to play with. They had nothing! Then I realized that worst of all, none of these dogs had access to water, there was no water for any of these dogs. I asked why, and was told that “all” the dogs were on special medication for their stomachs and they only received water at a certain time of day. In all my years of raising dogs, I have never heard of such a thing. Dogs are supposed to have access to water 24/7.

Some of the breeds were breeds I have never heard of or seen before. There were names on each on each pen of dogs, some in Egyptian, some in English or both. There were a lot of smaller like shepherd dogs, but pure white. One was tied to a 3 ft. chain standing on his dog house, I was in disbelief that he had not hung himself yet. There was 2 German shepherds, small in stature, and long haired. They were ghastly thin, their health looked so poor and malnourished, it was awful! Only one got up up for me and the other one wouldn’t get up. They looked to only weigh about 40 lbs. if that. I saw some of the dogs being fed, it was only a mushy rice. This must be why many of these dogs looked so malnourished and were so placid.

Behind all these pens of dogs was another area gated off. I saw from a distance a row of 10 rottweilers spaced a few feet apart all on 3 ft. chains. I tried to go in there, but was told not to because they were cleaning. All I saw was about 3 or 4 boys about the age of 12 cleaning the cages and feeding the dogs. I saw a golden retriever in a kennel like run with the rottweilers. I saw a litter of Siberian puppies in a small pen with no mother dog, thin and starving.

Mostly every dog I saw was in very poor condition, and mostly just laid or slept in it’s pen. I saw one dog get up and defecate in the same spot it was laying in because it had nowhere else to go. Then I realized way on the other side of the zoo was more dogs. This was a dog zoo! I went to see these dogs. There was a small group of Great Danes, maybe 5 or 6 being housed in what looked like where monkeys had been kept. It was a big area, they were by themselves there, and they looked terrible. These beautiful giant dogs were tall, but in bad shape, very thin and gaunt looking, so malnourished and had no spirit of life in them. You could not touch them because of the way they were housed, not one bothered to come by me. Then I saw some St. Bernard’s, they were ghastly thin and dirty and malnourished with no desire to get up. And of course there was no water for them. Then a little way off was a small pit like pen, made of cement and looked as if it housed some wild animal, but there were Dalmatians kept in it. They were below me, and you couldn’t touch them either. I couldn’t tell how many there were for sure, maybe 4.

They were laying on a cement ledge below me. They were also in such bad condition. They were so gaunt, dirty, and malnourished, no luster in their coats what so ever. Only one got up and looked at me as if to say “ help me get out of here”. again, the breeding of these dogs was poor. But they were the breed.

This place was all indoors, and there by the restaurant area stood a huge Ostrich. Left there to stand in a small round area for visitors to gaze at with no food or water. I left there in such a state of shock, I never did go over to see the lions. I do know that this zoo consisted of mostly purebred dogs. My husband and I have visited many countries outside of the United States, and have witnessed a lot of cruelty with the treatment of animals, and the heartbreak of seeing the street dogs and cats. But never in my life have I witnessed such inhumane and cruelty of theses dogs in this zoo, that is so unnecessarily caused by mankind.

These beautiful and wondrous breeds, who were bred for a specific purpose or job in life and most of all, human companionship, yet they are living a life of misery and solitude. These animals need our help and a voice to save them their cruel existence. They need an advocate, they need us. We cannot be the first tourists to see this. I know of various websites that talk about the cruelty of this place. When we left this zoo, I left with the most eerie feeling. It was the silence, no dogs were barking at all, there was no meaning in life in them. The entire time I was in there, you would have never known these dogs were even in there. The silence was heartbreaking. Dogs are domesticated, and don’t deserve to live like this.

I’ll never forget the eyes of these dogs begging for help. I left this place in tears.

Kathy Gowers
